The living legend that is Lee “Scratch” Perry has been extra-visible lately, from London to Colombia to Levi’s advertisements. The occasion? Super Ape Returns to Conquer, the 81-year-old Perry’s latest album, and his first with longtime touring band Subatomic Sound System. The visionary update of his 1976 dub classic Super Ape has earned accolades from Billboard, Rolling Stone, Wax Poetics and The Wire among others, and been hailed as one of Scratch’s most vibrant works in decades. (Read what we had to say about the project here).
Now, Scratch is coming to your town, too. LargeUp has partnered with the Dub Champions Festival and Subpac to present the Super Ape Returns to Conquer Tour, which kicks off Oct. 24th at The Middle East in Boston, stops in to Brooklyn nightclub Output for a live performance at legendary disco/house remixer Francois K.’s Deep Space NYC party. Along the way Scratch will appear at Daryl’s House (as in Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates), a Halloween night show in Austin, and perform at LA’s Dub Club, among other dates. Last time Scratch hit the road in the States, he had a giant, inflatable ape on stage with him. Who knows what surprises this tour holds?
