Words by Selector
One of the things I love most about dancehall and reggae is that, no matter where in the world you go, you can find like-minded fans of Jamaican music. So with that in mind this week, we have a truly global selection for your fulljoyment. We start with some dancehall-influenced Afrobeats outta the U.K. (mixed by a DJ from Switzerland, no less), recap some of the finest roots reggae releases from U.K. label Pressure Sounds (mixed by a New Yorker living in Japan, whoa) and, finally, bring it back to Los Angeles, with a short but sweet mix from Lexx Sequoia — an interesting young artist who mashes up all kinds of sounds, with an undeniable Jamaican influence. Wake the town and tell the people…
Lukie Wyniger – Basel x London x Accra UK Afrobeat Mix 2018
Need a dope new Afrobeat mix to practice your Shaku Shaku to? Basel-based DJ Lukie Wyniger, aka Uncle Peng Peng, has that London-Accra connection, and brings you some of the best in UK Afrobeats on this new hour-long mix. Even if you’re not working on perfecting your Shaku Shaku right now, this mix is highly recommended. Dancehall fans will enjoy appearances by Popcaan and HoodCelebrityy. Also featuring Nigerian stars Wizkid and Mr. Eazi, alongside U.K. talent like Skepta and Estelle. Good vibes.
Deadly Dragon Sound – Tribute to Pressure Sounds
In all honesty, if it wasn’t for Selector JD at Deadly Dragon Sound, I probably would have never started the Selector brand. His wealth of knowledge about reggae music was absolutely crucial early on in the brand’s history, and beyond that he had the Japanese distribution connection on lock too. This new mix pays tribute to British label Pressure Sounds, and was put together by the other half of Deadly Dragon, Scratch Famous. The respected label is known for putting out super-solid roots reggae since they launched in the mid-’90s. They’re about to celebrate their 100th release so they’ve been understandably making a lot of noise lately! Nuff thanks and respect to Deadly Dragon Sound crew.
Lexx Sequoia – Caribbean Baekery Mixtape
Lexx Sequoia is a cutting-edge musician from right here in California, who cooks up a unique blend of hip-hop with Caribbean sounds, hip-hop and electronic sounds. She was discovered by Grammy and Tony Award-winning producer Rich Nice of Trackmasters and Sway in the Morning. Her new Caribbean Baekery mixtape mashes up some of her original lyrics over some classic riddims, for some super nice dancehall/hip-hop fusion action. Pull up! Pull up! Get Baeked…
