Released in 1973 (and originally credited to his band, The Upsetters), Lee “Scratch” Perry‘s Blackboard Jungle Dub was the first full-length dub LP, igniting a revolution in sound that’s still unfolding today.
The techniques pioneered by Perry on that and other early releases continue to infiltrate all aspects of recorded music; Scratch, now 82 yet youthful as ever, continues to tour each year.
This month, Scratch and his long-time band, Subatomic Sound System, are hitting the road to bring audiences the Blackboard Jungle Dub album performed in its entirety for the first time, on the occasion of its 45th anniversary. The tour, presented by LargeUp, SubPac and Dub Champions Festival, kicks off this Friday, Oct. 12 at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom, and concludes on Halloween at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke, Mass. Well, that’s it for now, at least. We’re told more dates may be TBA.
