Spragga Benz recently issued his first album in nearly a decade in Chiliagon (Easy Star Records).
In keeping with the album’s title — in geometry, a chiliagon is a figure with 1,000 sides — the project presents different shades of the dancehall icon than we’re used to, notably the U.K. rave flavors that color much of the record. Exhibit A is “Trilogy,” which sees the Red Square general par with British MCs Killer P and Harry Shotta.
Unlike “If Yuh Ready,” the collaboration with UK fast chat legend General Levy we premiered here back in May, Spragga’s cohorts on “Trilogy” aren’t quite up to his level. Fortunately, Benz salvages things with double-time flows that will have you nodding in approval while struggling to keep up.
