Now two years deep into his transition from selector to artist, Yaadcore has developed a trademark style, blending up laid-back flows, Rasta consciousness and dubwise reggae with knocking hip-hop beats. Tracks like “Ready Now” and “The Calling” will get you to up to date, and give you a good idea of where he’s been and where he’s going.
For “La La Laa,” the latest single off his upcoming debut LP, Reggaeland, Yaadcore slows down the pace for something a little more mellow. The track is a collaboration with Sarah Couch, singer for Jamaican indie pop duo DejaVilla, and it has the casual feel of two lovers holding an intimate conversation after lounging the day away with some spliffs.
At least that’s the image proffered in the song’s video, directed by Tizzy Tokyo. Shot over one day at a studio-equipped house in the Hollywood Hills, the clip features cameos from friends in the L.A. music scene (DJ Rampage, we see you) while centering on the easy chemistry between Yaadcore and Couch.
It’s a timely drop as the video comes days before Yaadcore returns to the West Coast to appear at the inaugural California Vibes Fest happening this weekend at Long Beach’s Marina Green Park. If you’re en route, “La La Laa” will definitely get you in the zone.
Reggaeland drops Feb. 25th via Yaadcore’s 12 Yaad Records and Delicious Vinyl Island.
