Royalty Statements, the Florida-based music production team and creative collective consisting of members Dumi and Soigné, has teamed with Caribbean culture platform LargeUp to release Raboday vs Dembow, a culture-shifting mixtape blending the sounds currently running Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Raboday vs Dembow premieres today on Apple Music, as part of a new partnership with LargeUp to bring its catalog of DJ mixes to Apple’s digital streaming service.
To kick off the partnership, Apple Music is featuring a block of mixes from LargeUp tonight on its flagship radio station, Apple Music 1, from 7pm to 3am EST. Royalty Statements’ Rabòday vs Dembow mix airs from 10:05 to 11pm EST, and again at 2am EST on Saturday morning.
LargeUp’s Apple Music 1 takeover also features DJ Corey Chase’s Double Barrel (Reggae Samples and Hip-Hop Classics) at 7pm and 11pm EST, followed by mixes from Yaadcore and Rory Stone Love (Reggaeland: The Mixtape) at 8pm and 12am EST, and Deejay Theory (Dancehall By Day) at 9pm and 1am EST.
Based in Miami and originally from New York City, Royalty Statements’ Janlou “Dumi” Borges and Dru “Soigné” Goicochea grew up immersed in Haitian and Dominican culture, respectively. Since joining forces as a music production duo over a decade ago, the pair have crafted a distinctive, pan-Caribbean sound, spanning dancehall, reggaeton, konpa and hip-hop, Brazilian carioca funk and beyond, while working with artists from Serani to Jim Jones. Through their partnership, they aim to encourage more exchange between Haiti and the DR, countries which share the same island but remain divided by colonial lines.
“Dembow is the raw sound of the streets in the Dominican Republic and Rabòday represents the same for Haiti,” Dumi says of the group’s latest mix. “Now you are starting to have Haitian and Dominican artists like Tony Mix and Don Miguelo doing tracks together. It’s a really exciting time, because connecting Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a big part of our agenda, and motivation.” In addition to tracks from TonyMix, DJ Bullet, Tokischa and other Haitian and Dominican music stalwarts, the mix features original Royalty Statements remixes of tracks like Pop Smoke’s “Welcome To The Party,” Mura Masa’s “Blessin Me” and their own upcoming LargeUp Records release, “Number One” featuring Serani.
Building upon technology obtained through its purchase of Shazam, Apple Music has developed a new process to identify and fairly compensate all of the individual creators featured in thousands of DJ mixes. In cooperation with major and independent labels, Apple Music is directly paying rights holders within these DJ mixes and creating long-term monetary value for all creators involved, a feat once deemed impossible. Additionally, fans have another powerful way to discover new music, with mixes being supplied from such dance and electronic curators like Tomorrowland, Boiler Room, Cercle, and Mixmag. With the addition of LargeUp to the platform, fans of soca, dancehall and other Caribbean sounds now have a place to stream DJ mixes on Apple Music.
