Something our new facebook friend Ayeola George said reminded us to check for the designs of one-woman fashion army Mamayashi this morning. You have probably seen her handiwork draped over the form of that regally dreadlocked woman your eyes followed down the streets of Brooklyn–if you live in Brooklyn–or Kingston, if you live in Kingston. Back and forth between NY and her native Jamaica, Mamayashi has built an international following for her one-of-a-kind pieces, which transform the expected “cultural” iconographyย  of lions, pharoahs and Selassie-eyes into something fresh, painterly and new wave.
